Why salt is not a reliable solution
Salt scattered around a home is not an established way to eliminate a rat infestation. Do not rely on it or make homemade poison mixtures. Large amounts can harm children and pets if swallowed and can damage surrounding plants and soil.
Use established prevention
Remove accessible food and water, store food and pet food in rodent-resistant containers, keep rubbish secured, reduce hiding places and seal entry points with appropriate durable materials.
Address rodents already inside
CDC recommends appropriately sized snap traps, used exactly as directed and kept inaccessible to children and pets. If the infestation persists or inaccessible areas are involved, contact a qualified pest-control professional. Any pesticide must be approved for the intended use and used strictly according to its label; do not improvise a bait.
Do not substitute scent or sound
UC IPM reports that repellents do not solve rat problems beyond a short time, and ultrasonic devices are ineffective for controlling rats in homes and gardens. A temporary avoidance response is not eradication.
Clean safely
Do not sweep or vacuum dry droppings. Follow CDC’s complete rodent-cleanup guidance, including wet disinfection and suitable protection. Continue monitoring for new droppings or damage rather than promising a rat-free home forever.
