Here Is The Reason Why You See White Trees And What It Really Is!

Maintaining healthy trees is crucial for maintaining a vibrant ecosystem and enhancing the beauty of our surroundings. To protect trees from various diseases and pests, gardeners and farmers have relied on Bordeaux mixture for decades.

In this article, we will explore the importance of Bordeaux mixture in tree care, its applications, and how you can make your own at home.

What is Bordeaux Mixture?

Bordeaux mixture, named after the Bordeaux region in France where it was first developed, is a fungicide and bactericide solution used to control diseases on plants, especially trees. It is a combination of copper sulfate (CuSO4) and slaked lime (calcium hydroxide), which work together to provide a protective coating on plant surfaces.

Why is Bordeaux Mixture Applied to Trees?

  1. Disease Control: Bordeaux mixture is primarily used to combat fungal and bacterial diseases that affect trees, such as blights, mildews, leaf spots, and cankers. By creating a protective barrier on plant surfaces, it prevents disease-causing pathogens from penetrating the tree’s tissues and causing infection.
  2. Pest Management: In addition to disease control, Bordeaux mixture also helps deter certain pests like aphids, mites, and scale insects. Although it is not specifically designed as an insecticide, the copper content in the mixture acts as a deterrent, making it less favorable for pests to settle on tree surfaces.
  3. Orchard Maintenance: Bordeaux mixture is extensively used in orchards, where trees are susceptible to various diseases due to their close proximity. Regular applications can help prevent the spread of diseases from one tree to another, promoting overall orchard health and productivity.

How to Make Bordeaux Mixture at Home: While Bordeaux mixture is commercially available, some gardeners and organic farmers prefer to make their own. Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating Bordeaux mixture:

Materials Needed:

  • Copper sulfate (also known as bluestone)
  • Slaked lime (calcium hydroxide)
  • Water
  • Measuring spoons
  • A stirring stick
  • A sprayer or applicator

Instructions:

  • Wear protective gloves and goggles before handling the materials.
  • Dissolve 1 pound (454 grams) of copper sulfate in a small amount of warm water in a separate container. Stir until completely dissolved.
  • In a separate container, slake 1 pound (454 grams) of lime by adding it gradually to a larger volume of water, stirring continuously until a smooth paste is formed.
  • Combine the copper sulfate solution and lime paste in a larger container, slowly pouring the copper sulfate solution into the lime paste while stirring.
  • Add water to the mixture to achieve the desired concentration. The traditional ratio is 1:1:100, meaning 1 part copper sulfate, 1 part lime, and 100 parts water. However, adjust the concentration according to the specific needs of your plants and the target disease.
  • Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure proper incorporation of the ingredients.
  • Transfer the Bordeaux mixture to a sprayer or applicator and apply it to the trees, making sure to coat all surfaces evenly. Apply during calm weather conditions to minimize drift and ensure maximum coverage.

Note: Always follow the recommended application rates and safety precautions mentioned on the product labels or consult with local agricultural extension services for specific guidelines.

What Trees Is It Used On

Bordeaux mixture is applied to a wide range of trees, including fruit trees, ornamental trees, and forest trees. Fruit trees, such as apple, pear, peach, and cherry trees, are particularly susceptible to fungal and bacterial diseases due to the favorable conditions provided by their fruits and foliage.

Bordeaux mixture helps protect the delicate blossoms, leaves, and fruits of these trees from diseases like apple scab, fire blight, and peach leaf curl. Ornamental trees, such as dogwood, maple, and birch trees, also benefit from Bordeaux mixture applications, as they can be prone to diseases like powdery mildew and leaf spot.

Additionally, forest trees, especially those in commercial timber plantations, may require Bordeaux mixture to control various diseases that can negatively impact their growth and overall health. The versatility of Bordeaux mixture makes it a valuable tool for maintaining the vitality and longevity of a wide array of tree species.
